1st Int. Congress of General Practitioners

1st International Congress of General Practitioners 2014

25/26 September 2014 in Bonn

Welcome address of the Federal Chairman of the German Association of General Practitioners

Dear colleagues,

The idea behind an International General Congress of Practitioners is clear: The main features of the different health systems and the organisation of outpatient care sometimes differ substantially and sometimes they are very similar. Every country in the world is faced with substantial tasks when it comes to its health policy and it is now necessary to devise new structures and systems for this policy. According to the 7-country comparison of the Commonwealth Fund in 2008, German general practitioners, for example, offer a high standard of treatment compared with other countries. Chronically or physically ill patients in particular are treated by suitably qualified general practitioners.

Other countries such as the Netherlands have now assumed a leading role when it comes to offering support through telemedicine. However, as far as the routine involvement of non-medical healthcare professionals in the treatment of chronically ill patients by general practitioners is concerned, Great Britain leads with 73%..

In many countries, the medical care structures for general practitioners must first of all be enhanced and improved from scratch. There is also an increasing lack of general practitioners in almost every country.

These developments need to be monitored and interpreted. Through global networking and a close cooperation, impetus gained from different health systems can be combined in a process that involves the global transfer of knowledge.

The 1st International Congress of General Practitioners is intended as a platform for general practitioners to exchange knowledge and information, but is also an opportunity for decision-makers from the fields of politics, industry and society to combine best practices from all over the world.

Yours,
Ulrich Weigeldt
Federal Chairman of the German Association of General Practitioners
Vice-President of the UEMO
